Kafkanistan - Film / Book / Installation

SmileyWallah

Kafkanistan explores the world of present-day travel and tourism to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran; it is an image of that world based on actual happenings.

... it all started with an email send to me by Sean Foley asking if I wanted to join him exploring the world of tourism in conflict zones around Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Our first 4 week trip turned into a three year project resolting into a book, three films and a touring multimedia exhibition.

The Films

...after three years working on this project Sean and I had very different ideas about what Kafkanistan means to us. We decided each of us would produce a Kafkanistan film version from the same material. The outcome are two completly different worlds each of us rendered through out the years of working together.

The Book

Having worked on the editing of the film for over 6 months I realized that a film wont be enough for me to tell about the world Kafkanistan I/we imagined. In 2007, I started to edit a Kafkanistan book which was published in spring 2008. Below a few pages. The book is available on Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.de or Fraglich Publishing (preferred)

The Installation

Kafkanistan is now travelling around the globe. Each time a different setting, growing and turning into something bigger than I imagined. Flying burqas, Kafkanistan passports, landmine fields and photo bothes. The two major exhibitions so far took place in Beijing and TelAviv. See more images in the Exhibition section.
